Trauma changes the brain and makes it difficult to draw forth the internal resources needed to foster resiliency and healing.
Often, people who have a history of adversity and trauma struggle to flourish. Trauma affects the brain in ways that can make you more likely to experience difficulty when faced with emotionally stressful and demanding situations in your relationships, at work, and as a parent.
Often, we are so busy caring for others that we don't turn our attention to our own inner well-being.
Throughout my life, both growing up and as an adult, I’ve faced a number of challenging life experiences, stressors, and traumas, and I understand this struggle.
When I’m facing the greatest moments of uncertainty and adversity in my life, I've found it has also been more difficult to utilize all the skills I’ve learned along my journey toward healing.
During my 30 years as a science journalist, it has become clear to me that knowledge in itself isn't enough to change old neural patterns. When we try to change our thought patterns and reactions on our own, we automatically overlay old, ingrained thought patterns onto newly learned approaches.
It takes more to recognize and override old, painful thoughts so that we can flourish.

In this program for people who have faced trauma and adversity—through writing prompts developed over my 30 years as a science journalist eliciting interviewees’ most deeply felt emotions, memories, and insights, coupled with science-based writing-to-heal and mindfulness techniques–I teach you the process of “Neural Re-Narrating™.
1. Recognize old, painful thought patterns.
Through this program, I take you on a journey that will help you recognize old, painful thought patterns; examine your internalized stories about yourself and the world; observe how your history of adversity may be affecting your current health, relationships, work, and well-being; and begin rewriting your inner story.
2. Develop new, healthier responses.
By working within this workshop setting, with me guiding you through writing-to-heal techniques coupled with science-based trauma healing interventions and mindfulness methods, you can override your brain’s old, habitual reactions and begin to create new, healthier responses that change the brain and nervous system.

- Looking Back at Your Story:
In this lesson, we reflect on your story to get a brief overview of experiences you had in childhood, including those that might have been challenging or traumatic, as well as positive experiences and influences that helped you during difficult times in your childhood. You’ll also be asked about your sense of well-being in your current daily life, and you’ll set an intention for what you want to get out of this course, as you engage in your personal journey toward flourishing.

You'll find just what you need in this lesson to understand the latest neuroscience on how adversity affects the brain, body, and nervous system in ways that can harm your health, and why writing-to-heal is such a powerful technique for helping to reset the stress response, calming the brain and the body, and helping you to flourish even in the face of adversity.
- Beginning Your Healing Journey:
In this lesson, I'll guide you through deeper writing prompts as you begin recalling memories, feelings, and emotions from childhood, and examine your internalized stories about yourself and the world. You'll also learn a series of new “take home” self-calming exercises to help you whenever you are feeling overwhelmed.
- Finding Your Benefactors:
This lesson teaches you the tools for learning how to identify some of the positive experiences in your childhood when “benefactors,” or trusted adults, helped you to feel safe, seen, and valued. You’ll also learn how to call upon these positive emotions and feelings for inner solace and support. And you’ll engage in another series of guided writing-to-heal exercises that will help you to better understand the complex, often hidden connection between difficult emotions in your present life and the adversity you faced growing up.

In this lesson, you’ll learn more about how the brain dances with your environment, and examine why naming your feelings is important and how doing so helps to rewire your brain. You’ll also learn simple but powerful techniques and “take home” strategies to recognize, override, and replace old thought patterns, and begin to draw upon powerful new interior resources that have always been within you to help you create a new and powerful healing narrative—one full of new possibilities.
- Comforting Your Inner Child:
This lesson teaches you about the power that self-talk has on how you feel and on your health, as well as learn several new Neural Re-Narrating™️ practices to create more positive, healthier self-messaging.
